I Can’t Believe This Still Happens!

Posted by Heather on October 22nd, 2009

When a couple in Louisiana headed to the local justice of the peace, they never expected to step back in time only to have their marriage denied because they were an interracial couple.  Beth McKay and her then-fiancee Terence were told by Tangipahoa Parish’s 8th Ward Justice of the Peace Keith Bardwell they ” we don’t do interracial weddings or marriages.”

Did we go back to 1955?

Officials are calling for his dismissal and Bardwell himself said he would rather resign than be forced to perform such ceremonies.

It’s deplorable and for this man to say he is not a racist is laughable.  He’s only been promoting racial purity for the last 34 years of his employee with the parish.  If he felt so strongly about this issue while the majority does not, he should have been in another line of work that didn’t go against the strides we’ve made in this country. Love is love and he base his decision to marry a couple on their commitment to one another and the sanctity of marriage.  Nothing more.  And correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t a Justice of the Peace an elected or appointed position?  How has he remained in his seat for so long?
