Movie Review - Away We Go

Posted by Heather on July 7th, 2009

So Mr. Diva and I have lived in this city for almost 1 year and within a 5 minute walk to a super cool indie movie theater and never gone.  They serve beer for goodness sake!  How could we have stayed away so long.  We finally made it down there last Friday to watch “Away We Go” starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph.

The short of it - I laughed, I cried, I felt awkward FOR them.

The plot:  A long time couple gets pregnant with their first child.  Verona (played by Rudolph) lost her parents 10 years earlier and Burt’s (Krasinski) parents have their own plans.  The couple decides it’s time to find a new place to put down roots and they across the country to visit family and friends to see where they belong.  It’s a story of greener grass and finding out where you belong.

I was surprised at Maya Rudolph’s character - I think she’s more than just an over the top SNL performer and I hope we get to see her in a lot more diverse roles.  Krasinski was great, but he’s fantastic on The Office so that didn’t surprise me. Maggie Gyllenhaal and John Taylor (who is this guy - FUNNY) are fantastically loony while Allison Janney and Jim Gaffigan’s dynamic really made you feel uncomfortable for the couple.

It’s a sweet movie about how a family and a home are unique to the couple and it’s all about a journey.

I agree with you that Maya_Rudolph should try more serious characters and roles in cinema. She is a good actress indeed. But I just hope she does not stop making comedies because she is very funny. I owe her hundreds of laughs and I will definitely watch any movie she is in.Thanks for posting.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. It makes me cry from laughing, and cry from sadness. The acting is great, the directing and writing is great, the story is beautiful and honest and sweet. I think it’s a must, must-see.
