The 3 Things Game
Mr. Diva and I recently returned from a very nice mini vacation with friends down in Gatlinburg TN. We had a fantastic time - hiking, mini-golf, funnel cakes (to cancel out the hiking) and enjoying all the beauty and campiness the Smokey Mountains had to offer. But the drive was a little on the long side at 9 hours each way. Since we travel all too often to family, we’re used to road trips, but not THAT long. Typically, Mr. Diva drives and I do my best to keep him entertained with my wit and charm but even I have my limits.
Still he drove but after talking, doing homework (he was out of luck for about 2 hours), and reading Dexter out loud I was out of things to do. I offered to drive but he decline, which was just fine by me. So I started a little game of 3 Things.
Here’s how it works - you ask the other person a question about food, activities, personal possessions, television shows, etc and have them pick 3 specific answers. For example, “If you could excel at 3 skills you currently already have, which three would you pick?” Then you make it difficult by saying the other skills you have would be diminished slightly or never get better. This game is a great way to see how your spouse thinks about common things, but gives you insight into their thought-process! We played this game for about 2 hours and the time really flew. Great thing about the game; it can be adapted so the kids can join in on a long car ride and get to know Mom and Dad better as well!
Here are some sample questions you might start with:
- If you could only have 3 meals for the rest of your life, what would they be?
- If you could only vacation in 3 places, where would you pick?
- If you could gain 3 skills you currently don’t have, what would they be?
- If you could have 3 animals for a pet without worry they would harm you, what animal would you choose?
- If you could only eat three vegetables for the rest of your life, which would you pick?
- If you could only keep 3 personal items, items that do not serve a purpose other than they provide you with memories and joy, what would you pick?

Hello Heather.
Very much in the spirit of what you have devised for your traveling pleasure together, my wife and I not long ago released a 500 card game which couples can play “on the go;” in a five minute drive in the car, or for longer stretches along an open highway.
The original thought had been that couples would “play the game” mostly while out for a meal together, but many have told us that they grab a few cards as they head out the door, to play around a bit together while they wait in line for a movie, or over a coffee, or for an evening walk.
We invite you to take a look. There are many reviews on the site, as well as examples of some of the cards.
Best wishes!
