Salute to Good Television Marriages
I have worked about a million hours this week and we’re having family in for the weekend so tonight I’m going to sit in front of the tv and veg. No exercising, no cleaning (for which I will feel guilty), no nothing. Just tv. And maybe some Oreos (to further negate the no exercise thing). In honor of my 3 hours of nothingness, I want to give kudos to some television marriages. Not all television marriages at the stuff of According to Jim - some are actually interesting and seem plausible. So without further adieu, here’s my list of the television twosome created by writers who care.
1. United States of Tara - This Showtime drama about a woman with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). You can call it multiple personality disorder, but there’s a psychologist out there cringing if you do. The candid conversations and the freedom they allow one another shows that you can be supportive without being codependent on your spouse.
2. Rules of Engagement - You know those conversations that you think only your and your spouse have? You know - complaining about having to go out on a Saturday night with another couple when you’d rather just stay at home? Jeff and Audrey have them, so don’t feel bad the next time you do. You’re not alone.
3. How I Met Your Mother - Lily and Marshall are the cutest tv couple in the list. The audience is treated to secrets from time to time they share with their friends, but it’s clear the writers see their relationship as one of complete trust, love and tenderness.
4. Medium - Ok, she’s a psychic and talks to dead people, but the scenes when Joe and Allison are in bed are dead on marriage couple territory.

It’s sad how hard it is to find healthy marriage and family representation on television these days.
