No More Luther Vandross for Us!

Posted by Heather on February 8th, 2009

Since Mr. Diva and I moved to the bright lights of Cleveland, we have been setting up house on the second level of a house.  Battling $500 gas bills, a squealing downstairs neighbor who dressed up her Japanese Chin like a horrid little troll set loose in Hot Topix and the 3 am crooning from Luther Vandross from the upstairs neighbor as been a day to day occurance.  It hasn’t been fun.  It has, however, been cheap allowing us to save for a larger down payment on a house.  And after only 1 weekend with a super fab realtor, we found the house of our dreams.

We get to stay in the same general area, which is great and we both got what we wanted.  If you have ever purchased a house with your spouse, you know finding a home you both adore can be difficult. We both wanted an older home with character. But I wanted a pretty kitchen and he wanted (of all things) updated electrical.

So I have to say our search was as easy the second time around as it was the first.  But I’m sure there are couples out there that aren’t as compatible in the house hunting front.  I guess it’s another case of picking your battles so you can both be happy.  I have to say I’m a little disappointed that the search is over but now the fun part starts - decorating.  Mr. Diva would say he gets to run wires and other such manly activities that will require many the trip to Lowes.

Did you have to make compromises when house or apartment hunting with your spouse?

Never underestimate the value of updated electricity!!!! Our house is 85 years old. We have one outlet in each bedroom, one in the dining room, and a few in the living room. None in the upstairs hallway. :) Obviously, we survive, but I’m thinking updated electric has to move up the house priority list. :P

So happy for you to have found a place and excited for you to be settling into your new home. :)

Yes, I wanted a newer construction because they were move-in ready. But with new construction prices through the roof, I had to settle on a 20-year-old house, which means renovating and updating. We’ve spent the past two years modernizing our space…and we’re still not done! By the time we finish, it’ll be time to upgrade. :-)

I already had the house when we got married in ‘07, but my husband and I had to decide on what to renovate and how to decorate once finished. We both compromised things, but in the end, the house is beautiful! My husband did the renovations and even did a lot of the styling. I never knew my existing tastes were so bad until we put our heads together and got a newly renovated, modern, and stylishly decorated house! Too bad, we won’t get to enjoy it for long as we will be putting our house on the rental market soon!

gas bills? you live in the north? yet another reason why I hate it!!
