Most Unromantic Cards Ever
Mister Diva and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary this week. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 7 years already. In some ways it seems like forever and in other ways it feels like only yesterday I was kissing him in the doorway of the house he share with his college roommates.
In sticking with our tradition, we don’t buy each other individual gifts but rather we purchase something we can both enjoy (electronics in our case). Neither of use get off the hook in buying each other a card. But this year I notices something that was kind of disturbing - unromantic greeting cards. I would say that almost half the card I picked up would say something like “I know it’s not always easy” or “Through all the troubles we’re still together”. Are the greeting card companies telling me that couples need to bring up their unhappiness on their anniversary? Sure marriage is work, but I would think that most husband and wives would want to give their spouse cards that celebrate the love and joy.
In my opinion, these cards made marriage seem so difficult and laborious. Personally I think that greeting cards should make someone feel good, if even for a moment. The hardships of marriage persist through the year, but take that one day and devote it to celebrating you marriage, not dwelling over the issues.
Am I way off here? Do you think it’s a good idea that card companies have so many cards that talk about the difficult times instead of celebrating the anniversary of your wedding? Do these “realistic” cards speak to how people view marriage today?
