Mr. Marriage Diva and I were talking about the other day about when we got our marriage license and I thought I’d share the two funny stories from that fateful day. As we made our way through door of the marriage license office we were greeted by the happiest city worker I ever did have the honor to meet. But really, what’s not to be happy about? You give out the marriage licenses to happy, excited couples all day long! Anyway, he was a chatty gentleman who told us he’d been working there for over 15 years and today was the first time he declined a couple. I remember getting slightly nervous when he said that because for some reason I thought he was going to start making a habit of it. He then told me it was because the came in completely stinking drunk. He said it would not soon forget the day the couple could barely sit up start in their chairs!

Luckily we walked out there with license in hand, but as we went to leave a woman was sitting in the waiting room. The office was closing in about 5 minutes, not nearly long enough to procure a marriage license. She stopped us and asked what time the office closed and we told her. It was a Friday afternoon and her wedding was set for the next day. She had yet to get her license. And she was alone. She didn’t think her husband to be had to be there. I wasn’t about to break it to her that she would NOT be getting married 1) because they were 5 minutes from closing and 2) the groom needed to be there as well.

I guess that’s just another day at the marriage license office!
