Yes, I’m Going There
I’ve been on a news kick lately. I think it’s because I’m dealing with a bit of writers block brought on by the holidays and I need ideas to write about. Too much cooking, shopping (albeit online), and knitting. Yeah, why did I think it was a good idea to give so many people hand knit items. They sure as hell better wear the stuff I make or I’m going to demand they give me a month of their time in exchange.
Anyway, in my news perusing I found out that a marriage amendment is going to be on the Florida ballot in November. For some reason I was thinking it had to do with making divorce harder to get. Nooooo, it’s the government deciding it’s wrong for same sex couples to get married. Now tell me, how does two men or two women getting married REALLY affect you? I read some of the arguments against it. I was expecting some financial or tax reasons. Reasons other than archaic thoughts of bigotry. Couldn’t find a one. Here’s a rundown of some of arguments I saw on www.florida4marriage.org:
- Children need mothers and fathers: No joke, this is ACTUALLY the subtitle of an article. If that’s the case, then start working to keep heterosexual couples together. Don’t target a group who aren’t having as many children. At least children of gay COUPLES have two people in the home.
- Marriage is not a creation of the law: This argument states that marriage predates the law and is a societal and anthropological convention. You know what else WAS an anthropological convention? When men would fight like animals to breed with the women. We’ve moved past that.
- Homosexual Marriages are Harmful: Really? Do they cause hurricanes and flood? Hell fire and damnation? Are your retinas going to turn to ash when John and Joe move into neighborhood?
I love being married and I think ANYONE who wants to call themselves married in every sense of the word should be able to. If a church won’t marry you, don’t get all bent out of shape. We had a couple of priests refuse to marry use because we lived together. Find another church.
So Florida got enough signatures to get the issue on the ballot. I guess the people have spoken, but I don’t see why people for whom this issue doesn’t personally affect get a say in the matter.
My apologies for such a ranty post during the holidays.

“Marriage is not a creation of the law.”
Well, if that’s the case then I guess the law has no say in what a marriage is or is not. Therefore, a marriage can in fact be two men or two woman and there is not a single thing the law can do about it. So if society or at least a part of society wants same-sex marriages, then I don’t see why we have a problem.
