Marriage Stereotype
I recently got an inbox full of “funny” marriage jokes. Granted, some of the jokes were pretty funny but I wonder when enough is enough. For example, here’s a video of a comedian who uses a puppet as his joke vessel. Yes, it’s edited together with just marriage joke after marriage joke. But am I the only one that thinks these jokes sometimes just perpetuate marriage stereotypes? I’m tired of sitcoms making married men looking like ignorant idiots who drool over women like a dog over steak. I’m completely over the wife stereotype of a woman who spends her time digging up old arguments and nagging her husband every waking moment.
I do think that some stereotypes come from lesser traits in a group of like people. Those teeny, tiny traits are then twisted, exploded and exploited into an ugly portrayal of a person. For example, women usually ask their husband for help with certain chores because women tend to notice aesthetics more than men. That’s been twisted into the picture of a woman screeching in her husband’s ear to get off his ass and do something. I could go on and on with ugly overblown stereotypes within the realm of marriage and beyond, but I’ll leave you with this. Comical? A little. Harmful? Maybe. Tired, overused comedy? Definitely.

Now I have a good sense of humor but these jokes were just offensive.
