Are We Ready for an Unmarried President?
This morning while taking a mental break by knitting a bit, I decided to turn on The View because there’s nothing I love more than a bunch of women bitching about stuff. So what would it be today? Menopause talk by Joy Behar? I hoped not because I’m really tired of hearing it from her. I swear, she’s been going through menopause since 1996.
Today I was in luck, not only did Joy not talking about her hot flashes, but rather about the gospel singer Donnie McClurkin who has joined Obama on his campaign. McClurkin is an “ex-gay” who claims homosexuality is a choice. I think that’s a bunch of bull, but I digress as much as The View ladies digressed. The conversation then turned into whether or not personal integrity plays a part in politics. Which THEN turned into whether if a president has an affair while in office, if it affects his run as the leader of the country. Joy said that Clinton’s affair didn’t affect his presidency.
But how do we really know that?
I think anyone who has to cover their tracks and keep secrets, that’s time and energy that could have been spent elsewhere. Any married person having an affair has to lead two different lives. They have to remember the lies told, they spend time worrying about getting caught, they have to be emotionally, physically and mentally available to two people plus give 100% at work. And his job wasn’t a walk in the park. So you’re telling me that having an affair didn’t affect his presidency? I beg to differ.
If people want to have an open marriage, that’s their business. I don’t think the Clintons were a couple of swinging cats into S&M nor do I ever want a president that lives a risky lifestyle like that. I think Hilary was duped and Bill had some explaining to do when she found out. It probably weighed heavily. He hurt his wife, he hurt a young woman (who wasn’t altogether innocent either) and he hurt the nation by spending his time covering his tracks.
Then I started thinking about ALL the presidents and their marriages. I was only able to find one president that was unmarried while in office – James Buchanan.
Do you think that marriage makes a candidate seem more loyal or better qualified? Would an unmarried president look like you can’t find a spouse or you’re flaky? Do you think it’s almost an unspoken characteristic to run for president now? Maybe a candidate without a spouse or children at home could have an advantage in actually being president. Marriage and raising children are a lot work so if the president didn’t have a family of his/her own, he/she could dedicate more time at work! But does a family make you more credible?
I just don’t know – all I know is I’m not impressed with anyone yet and I really don’t like Joy Behar.
